Join Certified Jivamukti teacher Lisa Dawn Angerame and Nutritional Consultant Barbara Mendez for this informative and fun workshop where we will practice asana and then discuss the lifestyle of a healthy vegan. To be vegan is to practice ahimsa, one of the five tenets of Jivamukti Yoga. As our dear teachers tell us, few know that the welfare of all beings is the link to peace. To practice a vegan diet is to contribute to the happiness in all the world.
In our experience, many people have become vegan or want to become vegan but have questions: how will i get my protein? will i still have energy? what can i eat besidesvegetables? Lisa Dawn will teach a detoxifying asana class and then following a healthy snack, Barbara will give us a nutrition lecture, complete with handouts and q and a, where she will debunk the myths our culture has created so you can create a healthy vegan lifestyle for yourself!

Therapeutic Nutrition for Chronic Illnesses and Everyday Ailments with Barbara Mendez, RPh MS at the New York Open Center
In this 5 week series, Barbara Mendez will share strategies to manage our health through our diet and therapeutic nutrition. She will cover five of the most common types of chronic conditions for which medications are typically prescribed and lay out easy-to-follow programs that can help us minimize our need for medications. More than simply offering an alternative approach, Barbara takes this opportunity to delve into and discuss the chemical and biological stories behind the medications, the foods and their interactions with our bodies in a way that can be appreciated and understood by the both the lay person and nutrition professional alike. Barbara's background in traditional medicine and transition to nutritionist provides her with a truly unique perspective and the solid knowledge-base for addressing these ever more prevalent conditions and their nutrition solutions.
Topics to be discussed will be: elevated cholesterol, digestive disorders, depression, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Weight management, energy sustenance and the topic of nutritional supplementation will also be discussed so that at the end of the series we will have built momentum for adopting habits towards creating vibrant health. Pharmaceutical Drugs vs. Therapeutic Nutrition
How to Make Informed, Holistic Decisions, with Barbara Mendez, RPh MS at the New York Open Center
This evening we will tackle the difficult issue of deciding whether or not to take prescription medications when we have chronic health problems. When is it appropriate to follow conventional drug regimens? When might “alternative” approaches be more productive? And, at times, might both be used simultaneously? We will look at a range of options other than medications, including a number of foods, supplements, and holistic treatments, and, as a group, choose a few ailments (such as thyroid or cholesterol issues, for example) that we want to focus on more specifically.

ACQC needs your help.The Health and Wellness Seminar is a charitable benefit. There will be several presenters discussing the importance of exercise, diet, and stress reduction. Nutritionist Barbara Mendez will present the nutrition component for this event which will focus on the connection between food and mood, obesity and the truth about sugar - within the overview of a holistic approach to health via nutrition and a healthy perspective.
